Our Business

USSTC is focused on responsibly manufacturing and marketing its brands to adult tobacco consumers in a financially disciplined way, and providing contract manufacturing services to Philip Morris USA for its smokeless products. In 2012, the company's total retail share was 55.2 percent (includes PM USA smokeless tobacco products).

Smokeless tobacco category volume grew at an estimated annual rate of approximately 5 percent in 2012.

Our Moist Smokeless Tobacco Brands

Our moist smokeless tobacco product portfolio is led by Copenhagen. In 2012, it was the number one premium moist smokeless tobacco brand in the United States, and Skoal, USSTC’s other leading brand, was the number two premium brand. Copenhagen and Skoal achieved 27.9 percent and 22.5 percent retail share respectively in 2012.

In 2012, USSTC had 6 of the top 10 SKUs in the smokeless tobacco category. Our other brands include Red Seal and Husky.

USSTC's retail share was 55.2 percent based on data from the IRI InfoScan, IRI InfoScan Smokeless Database for Food, Drug, Mass Merchandisers (including Wal-Mart), Convenience, Military, Dollar Store and Club trade classes.*



* Retail share results for smokeless products are based on data from IRI InfoScan. The service tracks sales in the Food, Drug and Mass Merchandisers (including Wal-Mart), Convenience, Military, Dollar Store and Club trade classes on the number of cans and packs sold. Smokeless products is defined by IRI as moist smokeless and spit-free tobacco products. Other includes certain USSTC and PM USA smokeless products. New types of smokeless products, as well as new packaging configuration of existing smokeless products, may or may not be equivalent to existing MST products on a can for can basis. USSTC and PM USA have assumed that one pack of snus, irrespective of the number of pouches in the pack, is equivalent to one can of MST. All other products are considered to be equivalent on a can for can basis. Because this service represents retail share performance only in key trade channels, it should not be considered a precise measurement of actual retail share. It is IRI's standard practice to periodically refresh its InfoScan services, which could restate retail share results that were previously released in this service.
